As you enter a Zoom meeting, it’s not uncommon to hear a chorus of ‘Can You Hear Me?’ in various tones, ranging from cautious to assertive. It’s become our secret handshake in the world of digital communication. It’s like the universal badge we wear that says, “Hey guys, I showed up for the meeting…sort of.”
As a remote worker, virtual meetings are like my daily dose of insanity in the corporate world. Let me share some reasons why I fancy them so much;
- Pyjamas All Day
Firstly, as an active member of the ‘Pyjamas All Day’ club, these zoom meetings are my saving grace. I don’t need to worry about dressing to impress or going toe-to-toe with the traffic chaos of Lagos. Nope, I can strut my stuff in my finest ‘work-from-home’ jammies… Nobody has to know!
- The Cute Mute Button
The mute button is a remote worker’s secret weapon. It’s our frontline defense against the random chaos that govern our surroundings. Nobody needs to hear my neighbor’s generator giving a speech, or the traffic jam outside with its honks and hollers. Just mute it, and suddenly, the meeting is in a peaceful bubble.
- Multi-tasking
Working from home have transformed me into a virtuoso of doing a gazillion things at once. While I’m nodding along to a team member’s speech, I’m also surfing the web for the ultimate Jollof rice recipe or checking out the latest gist and gossip online. Don’t judge me.
- Commute happiness
The only commute I engage in daily is from my bedroom to the living room. No more sweaty Lagos traffic jams or long bus rides! I mean, who needs those morning doses of traffic fumes and rush hour jingles when I can have the sweet serenity of my own space and stay more creative?
- Shyness Free Zone
For introverts like me, this is a game-changer. I can participate in online meetings without the pressure of face-to-face interactions. No awkward small talk by the water cooler and no forced smiles in the elevator – just the comfort of my own space. It’s like being on stage without ever leaving the backstage. Super awesome!
So, as you can see, virtual work life in Nigeria is the best. I can fully embrace my inner couch potato, rock my PJs like a fashionista, mute the chaos around me, and take epic virtual journeys without even leaving the confines of my living room. The best part, I still get the job done effectively. Cheers to more ‘can you hear me?’ as they really do save lives.
