Just imagine it’s a Wednesday morning, you’ve finished listening to your popular inspirational podcast, and you’re ready to start creating content for the day. You make your video, take pictures or whatever content you want to make for the day and post it. But the likes and shares are not streaming in yet. What’s going on?
Stage 1: Denial
At first, you’re living in denial. You keep refreshing your social media page, convinced the likes and shares will start pouring in at any moment. Spoiler alert: they don’t. But hey, maybe the algorithm is just fucking with you abi?
Stage 2: Anger
Next is the anger. It gets even worse when you see a meme from a random account pulling in more likes than the one you got in your account. You start questioning your life choices, and everything you thought you knew.
Stage 3: Bargaining
Desperation sets in. You contemplate offering your firstborn child in exchange for more engagement. You’ll do and sacrifice anything to the social media gods so you can ‘blow’.
Stage 4: Depression
At this point, you’re deep into the abyss of social media sorrow. The sadness is sadnessing and you just don’t know what to do.
Stage 5: Acceptance
You realize social media is fickle, and not every post is destined for viral greatness. You just accept that you don’t have to have viral content with every post
Stage 6 & 7: Resilience and Hope
This step is when you understand that social media is not just a destination but a journey you’ll need to enjoy.
So, fellow marketers, take heart oo. The 7 Stages of Social Media Grief are basically a rite of passage. You’ve laughed, cried, and created viral hits – and you’ll do it all over again tomorrow. Onward to the next post!
