Nollywood actors and filmmakers are steadily raising the bar, and we love to see it.
On November 8, 2023, Mo Abudu took to her social media to share the exciting news, expressing her gratitude to the talented cast and crew. She announced that her directorial debut, comprising two recently released short films, has earned eligibility to compete in the prestigious Oscars, the renowned international awards academy.
She has this to say on her Instagram, “It brings immense joy to Mo Abudu Films and The EbonyLife Group to stand behind two incredible short films, “IYAWO MI” and “HER PERFECT LIFE,” which I had the privilege to write and direct. These films are now eligible for Academy (The Oscars) Award consideration in the “THE LIVE ACTION SHORT FILM CATEGORY.”
Abudu’s gripping short films, “Iyawo Mi” and “Her Perfect Life,” both delve into the realm of psychological thrillers, shedding light on the profound impact of mental health issues on two women and their families.
These projects represent Nigeria’s potential entries into the international awards arena, with “Mami Wata” recently chosen as the country’s submission for the International Feature Film category at the Oscars in 2024.
“Iyawo Mi” (“My Wife”) is a heart-wrenching narrative centered around Kunle, a young married man residing in the impoverished Lagos downtown area. His world spirals into a nightmarish descent when he returns home to find his wife, Eniola, in the throes of a haunting hallucination, screaming at their children and neighbours, and making ominous threats.
