The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) had a really good start to the year! They made a lot more money compared to last year – almost 50% more! The President of CEAN, Opeyemi Ajayi, said Nigerian cinemas made about N1.2 billion in January 2024, which is a big jump from the N819 million they made in January 2023.
Ajayi also said that over 322,000 people went to the movies during that time. He’s happy about how things are going and says Nigerians still love going to the movies.
This is good news not just for CEAN but also for the cinema industry as a whole. It shows that even though there are challenges, people still enjoy going to the movies in Nigeria.
In 2023, cinemas made about N7.35 billion, which is more than what they made in 2022. But even though they made more money, fewer people went to the movies. That’s because ticket prices went up.
Some of the most popular Nigerian movies in 2023 were “A Tribe Called Judah,” “Malaika,” and “Orisa.” And from Hollywood, movies like “John Wick, Chapter 4” and “Fast x” did really well too.
In December 2023, cinemas made a lot of money – about N1.6 billion! That’s the most they’ve ever made in December. And a movie called “A Tribe Called Judah” was the biggest hit.
Even though fewer people went to the movies in 2023, the cinemas still made more money because ticket prices went up. And while some new cinemas opened, a few had to close because running them became too expensive.
Ajayi also talked about Cinema Day, which happened in September. It was a big success and brought in a lot of money and people to the cinemas.
