Every week, you must ponder how those individuals on social media enjoy endless cocktails at Hard Rock Cafe by 8 p.m. while juggling their 9 to 5 jobs. The balance they strike is a marvel indeed. You need to know they don’t have two heads, Angela; they’ve only mastered the art of balancing their work and personal life.
Being a corporate baddie is slowly becoming a myth in every sense of the word. There’s simply no way that people dress to the ‘T’ for a life-sucking job and still have time when they get back from work to slap on salsa shoes and go dancing.
In this same Lagos?
Or is it Uche in Port Harcourt who takes off his suit and heads straight to The Boss Lounge to spend the rest of his evening? You might be wondering what you’re doing wrong and why you can’t seem to strike that balance in your work and personal life.
But some people are corporate baddies and social butterflies. You need to know how to balance your work and life.
In the realm of grown-up responsibilities and endless emails, achieving a work-life balance is almost impossible—especially when you live in Lagos with endless traffic. Work is known to sneak into our lives like a ninja at night, stealing our free time and leaving us with endless unchecked activities on our to-do lists and unanswered emails.
Balancing work and life is not as easy as you think, but I have good news for you. Below are some ways to become a better Uche and less of an Angela.
Master the art of saying ‘no’ at work
Simply set boundaries! You’re not Mother Theresa; there’s no reward for being overly productive. If you’re not getting paid to work overtime, pack your bags and go home. As soon as you clock off work, make a mental note not to check your work email and basically enjoy life.
Turn it all off
Are you worried your colleague might spontaneously combust without your email response? Maybe someone is dying at work and might need your help, so you take a quick peek and get sucked in for the evening. You can use apps to block notifications/emails so you’re not tempted to check them. Unleash the power of anti-temptation apps, saving colleagues (and your sanity) one notification block at a time.
Find time to do what you love
It’s very easy for work to become the center of our lives, but if you want to still have a social life after bagging that dream job, you’ll need to keep enjoying your hobbies.
Get enough rest
This goes without saying. Make sure you find time to sleep because a well-rested mind can conquer deadlines and still have time for Taco Tuesday at El Padrino.
All in all, work-life balance is not a myth. It is indeed possible to achieve balance, and it is up to you to decide to maintain a healthy work life.
