Working remotely is not as glamorous and exciting as most think. It’s the new normal now and after the pandemic in 2020, more and more corporate organisations and businesses are looking to make work 100% remote. Many studies also show that people who work remotely have a more positive work-life balance.
But below are some challenges that remote workers face and how to triumph against said challenges.
- Overworking
Time is one thing that remote workers don’t adhere strictly to and it can be very easy to fall into the loop of overworking. When your personal life and work are under the same room, it’s very hard to make the switch and focus on one or the other.
Some ways you can avoid overworking is:
- Set alarms to show end of day and stick to it.
- Create physical boundaries between you and your workspace.
- Reward yourself for achievements.
- Have a well defined to-do list.
2. Isolation and loneliness
It’s very easy to dread working from home because you won’t get to mingle with your colleagues and socialize. Some ways to get rid of isolation are;
- Actively engage in virtual social interactions with colleagues.
- Attend online events.
- Join virtual communities related to your industry.
3. Lack of motivation
With remote work, you’re either overworking or underworking and most of the time, there’s no in between. But there has to be an in between to be able to attain a good work life balance (add work life balance article link). To be more motivated and productive at work, you can:
- Create a daily routine.
- Set achievable goals.
- Break tasks into smaller, manageable parts.
4. Managing projects
When you’re a manager, there’s a certain pressure to make sure that all the tasks are done at a specific deadline and that everyone is doing their jobs well. But when there’s no opportunity to see your staff or colleagues in real life, there can be a slight communication barrier.
How to manage projects as a remote worker:
- You can use productivity apps that’ll track each member progress.
- Set and schedule daily or bi weekly meetings.
5. Technical issues
Ah, what’s is remote work without that sprinkle of ‘I can’t hear you. I think my network is a bit unstable.’ This is one of those very annoying challenges that you cannot control. But there are ways to minimize this issue.
- Ensure you have a stable and a backup internet connection.
When working, whether remote or in office, you’re bound to have some challenges and you’ll need to know how to navigate them.
