Good news for Nigeria and other developing nations. The UK government has pledged a whopping £37.3 million to support the Mobile for Development Program. This initiative aims to make mobile and digital technologies more accessible to people, helping them find new opportunities and improve their lives.
Announcing this generous funding at the 2024 Mobile World Congress, UK’s Development Minister, Andrew Mitchell, emphasized the program’s focus on empowering women and girls, addressing climate change, and scaling up innovative solutions. Already, the program has benefited over 100 million people worldwide.
With this new funding, the goal is even more ambitious: to reach an additional 110 million people, including 60 million women. Mitchell highlighted the potential of mobile technology to revolutionize lives by creating jobs, combating climate change, and boosting opportunities for women, aligning with the UN Global Goals.
The impact of such programs is already evident. In Pakistan, UK funding helped scale up a digital hub called BaKhabar Kissan (BKK), providing crucial weather forecasting data to farmers. The success story continues in Nigeria, where AI technology is providing real-time agricultural advice and solar-powered fridges to farmers.
John Giusti, President of GSMA Mobile for Development Foundation, emphasized the partnership’s significance in driving socio-economic and climate impact. Over the years, their collaboration has improved the lives of more than 127 million people.
At the Mobile World Congress, GSMA announced grantees for its Climate Resilience and Adaptation Fund, funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office.
These projects, ranging from AI-powered satellite imagery for farmers to reducing food waste through online grocery platforms, exemplify the transformative potential of digital innovation in addressing global challenges.
With continued support and collaboration, initiatives like the Mobile for Development Program can unlock opportunities, empower communities, and create a more sustainable future for all.
