On the 25th of February, 2023, Bola Tinubu won Nigeria’s presidential elections. Bola Tinubu’s victory purely came about through a lot of corruption, as we all openly saw. But in Nigerian politics, corruption is an added advantage. One might even argue that a presidential race without a dash of corruption is like jollof rice without spices – bland and unappetizing.
Anyway, moving on from this, Bola Tinubu won the presidential elections, but the opposition parties had more to say about that win than even Nigerians themselves. On March 21st, 2023, they all launched cases with the election tribunal seeking to nullify the results. This is where things got a little bit spicy. It’s like the Nigerian political equivalent of a reality TV show, which has all the dramatic accusations, finger-pointing galore, and a lot of legal jargon that most of us could not understand.
The opposition parties, in their act of securing justice for the country (or desperation, we can never know), decided that the election wasn’t entirely up to par.
The anticipation had been building like a Nollywood movie with a lot of suspense, and finally, on September 6th, the election tribunal results were supposed to be revealed. So, picture this: lawyers in finely tailored suits, expertly weaving intricate legal arguments while trying not to laugh at the absurdity of it all. At the same time, some dozed off on national television!
Nigerians have been waiting for this day with bated breath, hoping that finally justice will prevail, but the Nigeria election tribunal upholds President Bola Tinubu’s victory.
This victory was even more shocking given the VERY serious allegations the parties threw against him. Even we watching from a viewer’s standpoint could evidently see that he’s not fit to rule the country. But obviously, the opinion of the masses doesn’t count. It’s not like we’re a democracy or have anything of that sort in Nigeria.
Well, this is not the end because the candidates from the Labour Party and the People’s Democratic Party, Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, has decided to go to the Supreme Court. Will this act be a door to the justice we all seek? We will never know. But in the meantime, we can take solace in our politicians providing us with endless entertainment. After all, in this grand circus we call politics, laughter might be the best coping mechanism.
