The MTN Foundation recently held a conference in Lagos to fight the serious problem of drug abuse in Nigeria. Important people from different organizations were there, including government officials and those who work to stop drug use.
The conference focused on the MTN Anti-Substance Abuse Programme (ASAP). This program aims to stop young Nigerians (ages 10-25) from trying drugs for the first time. It brings together different groups of people to work on changing how people think about drugs.
At the conference, the Chairman of the MTN Foundation, Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi, talked about how important the ASAP program is. He said that drug abuse is a big problem everywhere in the world, but each country needs its own plan to fight it. He also thanked the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for their help.
Another big issue discussed at the conference was high unemployment in Nigeria. When people can’t find jobs, it can lead them to drugs. Studies show that many young Nigerians use drugs, which is a serious problem.
The Lagos State government is also working hard to fight drug abuse. A representative from the government said they understand the terrible effects drugs have on families and communities. They are happy to work with the MTN Foundation and others to stop young people from using drugs.
The conference highlighted the importance of working together and using facts to fight drug abuse. More money needs to be spent on preventing drug use in the first place, and different groups need to work together to solve this complex problem.
