So picture this; your responsibilities at work increased and you are making positive contributions but it isn’t reflecting in your paycheck. So, you’ve decided to risk it all and ask your boss for a raise.
What’s the worst that could happen? You get fired? That’s not a big deal because I’d still be here to keep you company and also teach you how to land a better paying job. Cheers!
Now let’s get real – Asking your boss for a raise can be intimidating and scarier than stepping into a haunted house, because you might not make it out alive…
Success stories, anyone? But like I said earlier, what’s the worst that could happen?
- Give Yourself a Pep Talk First
Before you go into that office, stand in front of the mirror and remind yourself why you are the star of that company.
“I’m good at what I do so I deserve more moolah. I deserve more moolah! They can’t even do without me!”
If you don’t believe you deserve the raise, maybe you should just go dust your CV instead.
- Make a List of Your Wins
Write down a list of things that you’ve achieved for the company, even the little stuff.
Like that one time you fixed the coffee machine? Check!
You manage to get to work early despite Lagos mad traffic? Double check!!
You don’t doze off during team meetings? Check, check, check!!!
- Dress for Success
Put on your best work attire. Do not dress shabbily. Pity is not what you want, is it?And also, we don’t want your boss thinking you are a clown because of that yellow silly tie.
- A little Bribery
Okay, maybe you can try a little emotional blackmailing. Do not go overboard. Be subtle, we don’t want your boss to feel you are bribing him. And if your boss is an agbero, don’t even bother.
- Predict The Future
Playfully talk about where you see the company going. Then you add a little twist by saying “and I’d really love to be part of that journey…. That’s if the paycheck allows”
- A Bit of Shakespeare
Sprinkle in some quotes or proverbs in the conversation but keep it light. Make sure you end your speech dramatically. Something like “To be or not to be, that’s the question.”
Remember, the goal is to keep things light but be honest and bold about your request. With a little dash of audacity, your bank account might just get a little fatter.
Goodluck, and may the odds ever be in your favor!
