In celebration of its annual sustainability week, “AXA Week for Good,” hundreds of AXA Mansard employees took to the streets to educate the Nigerian public about the impact of waste on water and the environment. This effort is part of the company’s “Trash to Treasure” initiative, aiming to improve marine life health and encourage behavioral changes to combat climate change.
Highlights from the Awareness Walk
The event featured key figures from AXA Mansard, including: Rashidat Adebisi, Chief Client Officer, Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Adebola Surakat, Chief Fulfilment Officer, Deji Tunde-Anjous, Chief Executive Officer of AXA Mansard Investments, Omowunmi Adewusi, General Counsel/Human Resources Director
“AXA Week for Good” is part of the global volunteering program, AXA Hearts in Action (AHIA). This initiative allows employees to contribute positively to society and the environment through volunteering, expertise sharing, financial support, and donations. Rashidat Adebisi highlighted the importance of this program, stating, “Through AHIA, our employees work together for a better future, sharing our knowledge and expertise to protect what matters.”
Trash to Treasure Theme
Under the theme “Trash to Treasure,” AXA Mansard employees participated in awareness walks, educating the public on the impact of waste on water. They collected trash from their homes and offices and participated in beach cleanups. The proceeds from the collected waste will provide health insurance for children in vulnerable communities through the Chess-In-Slums Africa Foundation.
The Importance of Recycling
Adebisi emphasized the importance of recycling, noting that 88% of plastic waste in Nigeria is not recycled, making the country one of the top 20 contributors to marine debris globally. She explained that the “Trash to Treasure” initiative aims to show how waste can be transformed into valuable resources, providing healthcare, fighting hunger, and creating jobs through recycling and upcycling.
AXA’s Sustainability Agenda
Adebisi further explained that the initiative aligns with AXA’s sustainability agenda, focusing on climate change and inclusive protection. Removing waste from waterways supports the climate change and biodiversity pillar, while using proceeds to provide health insurance for vulnerable children addresses the inclusive protection pillar.
In conclusion, AXA Mansard’s “Trash to Treasure” initiative demonstrates that properly managed waste can significantly benefit society and the environment, rather than posing a threat. This effort highlights the importance of collective action in creating a sustainable future.
